Jamshedpur: Tatanagar is set to become a green station.

The A1-category railway station under Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway (SER), has set up solar panels worth over Rs 50 lakh to light up the five platforms, offices, waiting hall, retiring rooms and dormitories.

Sources said a Gurgaon-based Renew Solar Energy Private Limited, which was entrusted with the job of making the station solar-powered earlier this year, has completed the installation of panels of 350 kilowatt on the roofs of the main station building and the platform sheds.

"The installation of solar panels is complete and it has been put on trial. The panels will start working in a full-fledged manner in the next few days," Bhaskar, the spokesperson for Chakradharpur railway division, said.

An official of the electrical wing of Tatanagar said Jusco would supply power in case of a failure in the solar system.

Tatanagar will be the second station under Chakradharpur division of SER to introduce solar panels.

In 2016, Chakradharpur had introduced the solar power project. Station director H.K. Balmuchu said the reason behind installing the solar panels was to move a step towards green energy development at stations as envisioned by the Union railway ministry.
