Ever wondered why a helicopter doesn't spin out of control? Visit the newly launched science park at Jusco School South Park in Bistupur, Jamshedpur, to learn about the principles of a gyroscope.
Learning science for Jamshedpur's school students will never be the same again.
Named the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement Exploratarium, the park was inaugurated by Tata Sons non-executive director D.K. Mehrotra on Thursday afternoon, as part of the 178th Founder's Day celebrations on Friday.
Jusco MD Ashish Mathur, other officials, principals of schools of Jusco Education Mission Foundation, teachers and students were also present.
The idea of the science park came from Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement in Saragur, Mysore, and the school park has been built under their guidance.
A total of 47 experiment models have been put up by Jusco at the science park to illustrate concepts of mechanics, optics, harmonics and others. Built across 4500sqm at a cost of Rs 50 lakh, the park will help students learn concepts by seeing and doing. Other schools can also book slots to visit it.
"In our childhood, many scientific questions remained unanswered. Children here are lucky to receive such a great gift and I hope they will use it to the fullest," said Mehrotra, who also released a book that explains the experiments.
"There are experiments essential for students to understand. Like the helicopter gyroscope serves to limit the left and right motion, or yaw, of the helicopter tail. This helps to keep the helicopter balanced," explained Jusco manager Vikas Singh.
Mehrotra and other guests planted saplings at the science park that also has wall paintings on scientific experiments along with pictures of Indian scientists like C.V. Raman, Jagdish Chandra Bose, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and others.
Anand Vardhan, a Class IX student of Jusco School South Park, summed it up best when he said: "Science is no more confined to the classroom."
Another Tata Sons non-executive director Ishaat Hussain inaugurated a technical exhibition at the SNTI, Bistupur, on Thursday. Students from technical backgrounds of various institutes put up some 40 stalls showcasing industrial experiments at the exhibition that will go on till March 5.
