Budding grandmasters from Jamshedpur cradles will be looking to make their best moves at a daylong chess tournament on Sunday at JRD Tata Sports Complex.
Organised by East Singhbhum District Chess Association, the event is open to students up to Class X. Students will need to pay Rs 150 as entry fee.
The event will be inaugurated at 8.45am and the first of six rounds will begin at 9am.
Secretary Narendra Kumar Tiwary said cash prizes would be given to top six contestants. “While the winner will receive Rs 1,000, the runner-up will walk home with Rs 700. The 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th top performers will get Rs 600, Rs 500, Rs 400 and Rs 300, respectively,” he said.
Students can enlist their names at Chess Centre on the premises of JRD Tata Sports Complex between 5pm and 6.30pm. They can also contact Jayant Kumar Bhuyan (9934339806), Ashok Verma (9234872396) and Chandan Kumar Prasad (9204357961) for further enquiry. Last date for registration is December 14.
Notably, the district chess outfit organises regular events at the sub-junior, junior and senior levels.
Earlier this month, the association staged a chess problem-solving contest for Under-11 school students. It was aimed at identifying the areas where the budding players falter.
“In a bid to groom young talent, we focus on schools. These children can be trained by experienced coaches and prepared for national-level tournaments. Moreover, participating in local tourneys helps sharpen their skills,” an official of the district outfit said, adding there were some players who had the potential to make it big.
