Ranchi, March 6: With the advent of summer, Ranchi Municipal Corporation is actively pursuing the creation of a third potable water source for its tankers to tap for distribution in various parts of the capital.
This water filling point, to come up at an RMC yard adjacent to a power substation in Harmu, is expected to be operational by the end of the month.
It will help ease the load at Hathi Khana in Doranda and Bakri Bazar in Upper Bazar, the two existing water-filling points which are located in congested areas.
RMC officials said they would need a borehole _ 125m deep, 20.32cm diameter _ to make the point operational. It was likely to be done by a private firm chosen after floating tenders.
According to an official, Ranchi corporation CEO Prashant Kumar okayed the project on March 4 after its standing committee agreed on the need for it.
At a meeting on February 19, ward 37 councillor sought an extra water filling point for tankers as the existing points were in crowded localities of Doranda and Upper Bazar which made it difficult for tankers to refill.
The councillor, therefore, sought a third water filling point at a relatively less crowded area. The standing committee accepted his demand on March 3 after discussions on the budget and decided on Harmu as its location.
"CEO Prashant Kumar then directed the RMC water board to take up the project and ensure it was ready before the beginning of summer," the official said.
RMC superintending engineer Arvind Kumar Sharma said they were on the job.
"We will float a tender by Monday or Tuesday. We hope to operationalise the deep borehole by the end of the month. Every year, water tankers start plying from April 15," he said.
Harmu residents were happy to hear about a water filling point in the area.
"My son's marriage has been scheduled for May. I was worried about water supply as we will have guests. But, now I am relieved to know that a new water refilling point is being developed near my home," said Arun K. Burnwal, whose house is barely 200m from the water point.
