Jamshedpur: Birsanagar police on Monday took gangster Akhilesh Singh in remand for three days to interrogate him in connection with the acquisition of residential properties using forged documents.

The police remand was granted by the court of first-class judicial magistrate Shrivendu Trivedi in the afternoon and Akhilesh (39) was escorted out of Ghaghidih Central Jai by evening.

Birsanagar OC Upendra Narayan Singh said the gangster would be quizzed about landed property he had amassed in the steel city as well as in states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh. "He and his wife (Garima Singh, 30) faked identities and forged papers to amass wealth," the officer said.

Akhilesh, the younger son of retired police officer Chandragupt Singh of Sidhgora, was convicted in the murder of a Sakchi jailer and wanted in connection with over 50 other criminal cases.

The gangster had jumped parole last year and remained absconding during which he plotted the murders of transporter Upendra Singh and his close associate Amit Rai on November 30 and December 6. He was arrested from Gurgaon following an encounter on October 12 this year.

At Ghaghidih jail, the gangster is being kept alone in a special ward. Jailer Baleswar Prasad Singh said two convicts, serving life sentence, had been deputed to keep an eye on Akhilesh round the clock. "They have standing instructions to report to the authorities if they find anything suspicious, like use of mobile phone," the jailer said.

Akhilesh's wife Garima is lodged in the female ward while two of his recently arrested business associates - Citi Inn owner Binod Singh and mini-steel plant owner Sanjay Palsania - are lodged in general ward and jail hospital, respectively.

"Palsania is paralytic and walks on crutches. Jail guards have been put on extra alert," Baleswar Singh added.
