The Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (Rusa) has asked Jamshedpur Women’s College to gear up for the foundation ceremony of the first women’s university in the state that is likely to be laid online by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 15.

The Bistupur-based institute got the Union HRD ministry’s nod to become a women’s varsity in early-2017. The permanent campus will come up on a 17.79-acre plot at Bagunhatu, adjacent to Surya Mandir in Sidhgora here.

Rusa state nodal officer Shambhu Dayal Singh on Sunday met Kolhan University vice chancellor Shukla Mahanty and principal Purnima Kumar to discuss the event.

“The college will have to make a lot of arrangements. The first thing is installation of high-speed internet leased line (ILL). In addition, it has to prepare a detailed guest list. We have also discussed how to make the event successful,” said Singh.

Kumar and Mahanty will meet East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Amit Kumar on Monday as the latter is the nodal officer for this event.

“It will be a big day for us and we do not want any glitches,” Kumar added.

The college had applied for the ‘university’ status in 2016. In February 2017, the Project Approval Board under the Union HRD ministry gave the institute the go ahead to upgrade itself to a university under Rusa and sanctioned Rs 55 crore.

The college started operating out of a rented apartment in 1953. In 1960, Tata Steel helped the college moved to its present building, then known as Patthar School. Science was introduced in 1974 and UGC granted autonomy in 2008. Today, the college boasts 8,109 students in 22 departments.
