Ranchi, Aug. 18: The Jharkhand telecom circle of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is contemplating on delivering pre-paid sim cards to homes of subscribers.
BSNL has started home delivery in Jamshedpur, where the telecom major plans to distribute 6,500 sim cards by the end of this month.
BSNL sources said the move is aimed at ensuring that the cards are delivered to the right person.
Since home delivery automatically verifies the genuineness of the subscriber, the move is likely to reduce the number of complaints about verification.
?Applications for pre-paid sim cards were invited last year. There are more than 30,000 people on the waiting list in Jamshedpur. At present, we are giving SIM cards to 6,500 people through home delivery,? said a senior BSNL official.
He said according to TRAI guidelines, the telecom company is required to ensure identity verification so that the SIM card is delivered to the genuine subscriber.
Asked whether such an exercise is being carried out for post-paid SIM cards as well, the official said, ?Post-paid applicants who have a fixed-line connection need not be verified, as they are required to submit a photocopy of their last telephone bill. This is sufficient for verification purposes?.
The official said if the Jamshedpur experiment succeeds, it would be extended to Ranchi and other areas as well.
