Pratyusha flat opens up fresh fears

The parents of late TV actress Pratyusha Banerjee, who learnt on Tuesday that her Mumbai flat had been opened by the police two days ago, told the media they feared their daughter's influential fiance might destroy crucial evidence at the site where the 24-year-old star was found hanging on April 1.

Speaking to newspersons from their Sonari home in Jamshedpur, Pratyusha's parents Shankar Banerjee (50) and Soma Banerjee (46) said they came to know from a close relative that their daughter's seventh floor flat at Harmony Apartment in suburban Goregaon had been opened by Bangurnagar police.

"The flat had been sealed by the police for a probe," Shankar said before leaving for Mumbai on Tuesday evening. "Before we left Mumbai in May, we had requested the local police and Mumbai commissioner of police (Dattatray Padsalgikar) that the house be opened only in our presence as it may have crucial evidences in the case. But, we now hear the flat was opened without our knowledge."

The bereaved father added that they feared that Rahul Raj, Prayusha's fiance charged with abetting her suicide, might tamper with evidence.

More than abetment to suicide, Pratyusha's parents have constantly been alleging their daughter did not commit suicide but was murdered by Rahul, a TV actor and producer, who has roots in Ranchi's Namkum.

Demanding a CBI probe into the case, they have also alleged that certain influential persons in Mumbai were helping Rahul covertly to hush up the case.

"The police have in their investigation report before Bombay High Court expressed suspicion about Rahul Raj's involvement in drug peddling. We have a strong feeling that several influential persons are helping him. By opening the flat, they might try to destroy valuable documents that hint at his involvement," said mother Soma.

Abetment to suicide, as defined in Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code, is a non-bailable offence (as per the Schedule appended with the Criminal Procedure Code).

But, Bombay High Court granted anticipatory bail to Rahul in April. Though Prayusha's parents moved Supreme Court on May 30, it declined to quash the high court ruling.

Pratyusha's parents have also met Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu in Ranchi and Union home minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi. "The governor assured us of all help in our fight for justice. Home minister Rajnath Singh gave us a patient hearing and promised to take up the issue with Maharashtra government," Shankar said. "Unfortunately, we could not meet our chief minister Raghubar Das."

The parents had also launched a signature campaign for Pratyusha in her hometown Jamshedpur. "We will do all we can to give our beloved daughter justice," they said.
