Tatanagar station and the nearby railway colony are facing power crisis after a high capacity transformer of Jharkhand Urja Vikas Nigam (JUVNL) got damaged.

Railway sources said the new transformer was of lesser capacity.

Anand Lawrence, assistant divisional electrical engineer of Tatanagar, said they were serviced by both Jusco and JUVNL. While JUVNL supplies power to the railway colony, the private utility company serves Tatanagar station and loco sheds.

"The previous 3MVA transformer has been replaced by a 2.5MVA one. This is causing the power crisis. We will overcome this problem shortly as we are getting another transformer soon that will share the load. We have requested Jusco to provide us another dedicated line," he said.

But, residents are facing the heat. "We were unable to sleep for the last two nights due to erratic power supply," said Awdesh Kumar Singh, a resident of railway colony close to the Tatanagar station, with around 3,000 quarters.

A Tatanagar source said the station was witnessing frequent outages of late. "A couple of days back there was a blackout at the station for about 10 minutes," he said.

Station manager O.P. Sharma said he had taken up the issue with higher authorities at Chakradharpur.
