Hazaribagh, Aug. 3: Mobile phone tracking system helped police nab Vikas Tiwary, the leader of the Bhola Pandey gang and the main accused in the murder of rival gangster Sushil Srivastava on the premises of Hazaribagh court on June 2.
Vikas (in picture), who allegedly masterminded the shootout in which two of Srivastava's aides were also killed to avenge the murders of his gang leader Bhola Pandey and his nephew Kishore Pandey, was arrested from Connaught Place, New Delhi, on Saturday.
Confirming the arrest on Monday, Hazaribagh SP Akhilesh Kumar Jha said they had obtained Vikas's three-day transit remand from Patiala court. "He was brought to Hazaribagh in the evening today," he added.
Speaking about the prize catch, a police officer investigating the case told The Telegraph that they had initially tried to mount pressure on Vikas by arresting his father Shambhunath Tiwary from Patratu of Ramgarh and than one of the two shooters, Santosh Pandey. But that did not yield result.
"During investigations, we came to know that Vikas was carrying seven to eight mobile phone numbers. But he switched off these numbers after the June 2 shootout. On Saturday, he happened to switch on one of his cellphone numbers and we immediately came to know about his location at Connaught Place as we were constantly tracking his phones. Delhi police were alerted and a trap was laid to nab him," the officer said.
Sources said that a team of Jharkhand police had already interrogated Vikas in Delhi and he was believed to have spilled some vital information.
SP Jha admitted that they were closer to cracking the case, saying that one more shooter had been arrested from Uttar Pradesh.
"Another shooter Raju Singh was nabbed from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday. Jharkhand police will also take him on remand. Once both Vikas Tiwary and Raju Singh are grilled thoroughly, we will be in a position to solve the case," Jha told The Telegraph, adding that investigations so far had confirmed involvement of many persons in the case.
