More than 50 disgruntled parents staged a dharna in front of Dhanbad’s Delhi Public School (DPS) on Wednesday, to protest against a host of issues — including an “unprecedented” 15 per cent hike in tuition fee and non implementation of the provisions of the Right to Education Act.

The guardians, backed by three student unions and a city-based NGO shouted slogans against the school management during their three-hour long agitation that started around 8am.

The protesters, who claimed that they had given prior notice to the school about their agitation, convened a meeting later, after a slight confusion, with DPS officials led by principal K.B. Bhargava.

“The school did not take us into confidence before hiking its fee. The new fee structure will mean that I will now have to cough up Rs 170 more as the tuition fee of my son,” said a parent, who works with a private firm, on condition of anonymity.

The agitators, during the meet also expressed their displeasure on the practise of some teachers holding private tuition classes after school.

Apart from of Bharitya Janata Yuva Morcha others who took part in the protests were the NSUI, ABVP, Jharkhand Chatra Morcha, Ajsu, and some representatives of Paropkar Param Punya Samiti, an NGO.
