Jamshedpur, Oct. 11: The steel city hosted a bunch of unusual visitors today.

A four-member team of the National Security Guard (NSG) reached here on a barely two-hour hurricane tour to review security arrangements in the wake of AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s visit on October 15.

The popular youth leader is expected to interact with potential candidates for the forthcoming Indian Youth Congress elections.

The NSG team visited two proposed venues — Michael John Auditorium and Tata Auditorium — for the party meeting and also reviewed security at Sonari aerodrome, where Rahul’s aircraft will land on Thursday.

The NSG team remained at Michael John Auditorium for 30 minutes and inspected the new parking space created for the event. They visited Tata Auditorium on XLRI campus for 15 minutes. The hall has a capacity of 1,000.

Security was also reviewed along the route Rahul would take from Sonari. The team spent 10 minutes at the airport after which it packed up.

Senior Indian Youth Congress leader Tarun Baheti said the venue of the meeting was yet to finalised. The AICC general secretary will interact with 150-200 potential candidates from Kolhan division, which consists of Jamshedpur and West Singhbhum parliamentary constituency. The interactive session is expected to last for about an hour.

The Youth Congress had begun a membership drive in the state from September 15. It will continue till October 12. The drive proposes to give a new lease of life to grassroots leadership in the party.

Sources said the district Congress was in favour of organising the programme at Michael John Auditorium, but security officials were mulling the event at Tata Auditorium.

“Security officials have not rejected any venue, but have said that Michael John Auditorium, located in a market area, will be packed for Dhanteras. But we want to conduct the event there since the auditorium was inaugurated by Rajiv Gandhi,” said a Congress leader, requesting anonymity.

He maintained that the final decision on venue had been left on the party high command.District Congress president Rabindra Jha, who accompanied the NSG team, said that though Rahul’s visit to the city had been finalised, exact details of his itinerary were not made available yet.

The party is expected to brief the media on Monday.
