Jamshedpur: He did not get many opportunities to display his prowess in the Indian Super League (ISL), but goalie Rafique Ali Sardar is happy being his star counterpart Subrata Paul's understudy.

The 19-year-old Rafique, who graduated from Tata Football Academy (TFA) earlier this week, has been retained by Tata Steel-owned Jamshedpur FC for the upcoming ISL.

"I will give my best whenever I get an opportunity to play for the JFC. Even if I don't get a chance, I would like to continue learning from Paul, who is not only a good goalkeeper but also a very humble person," Rafique, who hails from Baruipur in Calcutta, said.

The teen goalie, who idolises German custodian Manuel Neuer, said Paul carries himself beautifully both on and off the field. "I have learnt a lot watching him from close quarters during ISL matches. Paul is always available for advice. What more can a youngster like me need," Rafique said.

Thanking JFC for retaining him, he said goalkeeping was a difficult job which needs a lot of concentration, reflexes and fitness.

"I am lucky to have trained at the TFA for four years. I think I have come out as a better goalkeeper. I am looking forward to the ISL with a lot of hope," the goalie said.

Rafique was part of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan youth academies before he got selected at the TFA. He was even called up for the Under-19 national camp.

Son of a businessman who sells health equipment, Rafique said he got good support from his family when it came to choosing football as a career.

"My parents Esar and Rijiya Bibi always supported my dream to become a footballer. I will remain thankful to my parents," he said.
