Jamshedpur, May 16: Brother of 22-year-old Tanu Agrawal, who died at the Tata Main Hospital’s (TMH) intensive care unit on Friday night, said today neither Gopal Agrawal — Tanu’s husband — nor his family had ever demanded dowry.

Tanu was eight months pregnant. According to her in-laws, she had suffered a sunstroke.

However, Tanu’s father Banwari Lal Agrawal suspected foul play behind the death and demanded a post-mortem yesterday. He accused her in-laws of having poisoned her.

Forensic doctors today preserved the deceased’s viscera for chemical analysis. The experts detected the foetus of a baby girl in the womb of the deceased.

According to Tanu’s husband Gopal Agrawal, Tanu used to visit the gynaecologist for regular check-ups. “We were waiting eagerly for our first child. But that was not to be,” he said.

“On Friday evening, I went to her consulting doctor who advised me to get her admitted in TMH. She had high fever and was in a coma-like state. We took her there and she was rushed to the ICU. She was admitted at 7.25 pm. After two hours, at 9.35 pm, she was declared dead,” he dded.

Tanu’s parents refused to accept her death as a “natural one” before getting the post-mortem reports. “How can she suffer a sunstroke in spite of staying indoors all the time?” he said. However, he could not specify a motive for the alleged poisoning.

Tanu’s brother admitted that neither Gopal nor his family had ever demanded dowry. “However, they would not allow my sister to talk freely with us over the telephone. Besides, they informed us only when she had passed away,” he said.
