Why are people not keen to study Sanskrit even when it is the seed of our culture?

Some politicians have conspired by trying to associate the language with a particular caste, creed and community. Even the government has not taken any step to promote the language. The state government has also made it an optional subject.

Why is Sanskrit considered difficult?

It is a myth that Sanskirt is difficult. The language is easier than any foreign or Indian language. If taught by good teachers, students can obtain better marks in the language by devoting only half the time they do to other languages. For Indians, learning the language is easy as it is related to our mother tongue.

What steps should be taken to improve the condition of Sanskrit?

Sanskrit should be made job-oriented and people should be allowed to opt for it for different competitive examinations. Religious teachers, who conduct rituals on many occasions, should popularise the language by spreading the knowledge hidden in mantras and sholkas of Sankrit.

When tribal organisations are pressing for promotion of tribal and regional languages in Jharkhand, what do you think is in store for Sanskrit?

I cannot comment on the demands for promotion of regional and tribal languages, but I have seen that tribals are keen to learn Sanskrit. When I was posted in one of the tribal dominated area of the state, Simdega, I met thousands of tribal students — boys and girls — learning Sanskirt with great interest. When I was young, I met many good school teachers who used to teach Sanskrit to young tribal students.

How will Sanskrit help those who do not want to make a career out of the language?

The knowledge of the language generates awareness of the Indian culture. It also assists research work as there are many unread manuscripts written in Sanskirt, which are supposed to carry information that would be helpful for solving mysteries associated with science and many other subjects.
