Do keep your spirits sunny, but don't hang your brollies or wellies this weekend.

A low-pressure trough, which had originated in the Bay of Bengal and was hovering over Gangetic Bengal until Thursday, intensified into a depression over Jharkhand on Friday with the promise of downpour for another 48 hours.

Downpour in the past 24 hours has already helped the state notch a surplus percentage of 13, which was only three a few days ago. The rain gain will continue to soar with weathermen predicting more showers in most places during the weekend, courtesy the depression coupled with an active monsoon trough passing over the state.

"The depression lies centered some 30km southwest of Ranchi. Owing to its impact, many places across the state including the capital experienced heavy rainfall since last (Thursday) night," said D.G. Hedau of Ranchi Meteorological Centre.

Both Ranchi and Patna Met offices have issued heavy rain warning until the depression loses its intensity in the next 48 hours.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, Calcutta, too extended its heavy rainfall alert for Jharkhand for another two days. "The low-pressure area has converted into a depression because of which we are expecting good rainfall activity in Jharkhand in the next 48 hours," said a duty officer.

Friday's Met data showed actual rainfall of 340.2mm against a seasonal average of 301.8mm.

"The depression will result in uniform rain in the next 48 hours. Apart from Jharkhand, it will gift a good spell to Odisha and north Chhattisgarh," said Hedau.

Officials at the Doppler radar section in Patna said over 75 per cent IMD stations across Jharkhand had reported rainfall in the past 24 hours.

Palkot in Gumla district topped the chart with 130mm, followed by Ranchi where the local observatory recorded 105.6mm (between 8.30pm to 8.30am). Massanjore in Jamtara district was a close third with 100 mm while Dumka, Deoghar and Simdega scored around 90mm each.

Madhupur in Deoghar experienced 60mm while Chakradharpur and a few other places in West Singhbhum district recorded 40mm each in the past 24 hours. Reports of downpour also poured in from Ramgarh, Daltonganj, Bokaro, Lohardaga and several other districts. Dhanbad recorded over 21mm of rain while the IMD observatory in Jamshedpur registered around 20mm.

Dumka tops the list of rain-surplus districts with 81 per cent. Other gainers are Deoghar and Godda (49 per cent each), Pakur (45 per cent), Ramgarh (40 per cent), Latehar (39 per cent), Garhwa (33 per cent), Gumla and Hazaribagh (29 per cent each), Jamtara (19 per cent), East Singhbhum (9 per cent), West Singhbhum (8 per cent) and Lohardaga (3 per cent).

The deficit list comprises Koderma (26 per cent) and Dhanbad (21 per cent).

Rainfall is normal in all the remaining districts.
