Bokaro, March 24: What’s in a number? The sum of all successes, says DPS.

Five students from this elite city school have not just cracked the International Mathematics Olympiad, but have also bagged the winner and runners-up titles at the meet, which saw some 8,000 participants from across the globe.

Besides hosts India, the Olympiad saw nine other participating countries — the US, Singapore, Kuwait, Muscat, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

In the preliminary round, more than 60,000 students from these 10 nations appeared for the test. Some 50,000 were from India. The final round of brainstorming, held in various state capitals on February 23, saw 5,000 Indian students. The results were declared today along with that of the National Science Olympiad.

Besides DPS, a student of Chinmaya Vidyalaya (Bokaro), two students from St Xavier’s School (Ranchi) and a student from St Thomas School (Ranchi) also won the numbers game. Three others from Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Deoghar also made it to the top 12 in their peer categories.

Class X DPS boy Anand Boddu emerged as the best brain at the global meet. Schoolmate and Class II student Anurag Sinha notched the runner-up title in his category. So did Class IV student of Chinmaya Ritesh Mahto.

Ajit Kumar Verma, the state co-ordinator of Olympiads, said DPS Bokaro had been adjudged the best school of the country, as its students excelled in science, cyber and math meets for years in a row.

Honorary principal of DPS Hemlata S. Mohan, also chairman of the state human rights commission, said the students had proved their mettle once again. “I feel proud because they have excelled not at state or country level, but at an international meet,” she said.

Number wizard Anand, son of a Bokaro Steel engineer, said encouragement from parents and teachers, particularly Mohan, had helped him achieve this glory. “I want to be an IAS officer, but before that I will crack IIT-JEE and study electronics,” said the teenager.

Though his father hails from Andhra Pradesh, Anand, born and brought up in the state, says he is a hardcore Jharkhandi. “I love my state and want to do it proud,” he added.
