Ranchi, Sept. 14: Celebrations on Hindi Day revealed many reasons behind the treatment of Hindi as the national language and its need to be promoted even today.

Canara Bank’s deputy general manager R.R. Sharma said people need not question the celebration and use the occasion to see what needs to be done for this language. Sharma sees an increasing role for Hindi in banking, as banks, today, want to rope in as many customers as possible.

Chief manager of Punjab National Bank, N.P. Bakshi, at another function lauded the September 14 celebrations and described it as important as August 15 or January 26 because it was on this day that our country got its national language. Professor Dineshwar Prasad, retired professor of Hindi, said those speaking the language everyday are better ambassadors of the language than any scholar. Prasad said, Hindi represents our culture and is our identity.

Hindi teacher Usha Singh of Cambrian School said Hindi does not need any support from politicians to make it popular. The speakers felt a sincere effort is still awaited to make it acceptable across the country. On the official front, the divisional commissioner organised a programme at Vikas Bhavan where poets shared their creations with the audience.

Governor Syed Sibtey Razi and chief minister Madhu Koda used the newspapers to convey their respective messages on Hindi Divas. Director M.K. Deshmukh inaugurated the Hindi Rajbhasha Week at Mecon. Senior officer of Mecon, Dr Ramapati Tiwari, read out the message of Union home minister Shivraj Patil.
