Ranchi/Jamshedpur, Nov. 27: Where Mumbai faltered, the state is taking no chances.

Luxury hotels here are ensuring that alertness and hospitality, henceforth, go hand in hand. Although the district administration and police machinery in Ranchi failed to send any security advisory to hoteliers, officials have drawn up plans to prevent any untoward incident.

President of Capitol Hotels Ravinder Singh said: “We have told hotel employees to check on every guest. We have to be extra cautious. We are trying to be cordial as well as strict.”

At Capitol Hill on Main Road, too, gatekeepers and attendants were on alert. “We have been told to verify whether each person entering the hotel is a genuine guest. We are requesting visitors not to feel offended by our questions,” an attendant said.

At hotel Green Horizon on Station Road, four security personnel — instead of the usual two — were seen maintaining vigil, while officials of Hotel Ashok said they had deployed guards from a private security agency.

In Jamshedpur, Fortune Hotel Centre Point and The Sonnet have stepped up security, too. Everyone entering the premises is being frisked and vehicles are being checked.

Rajiv Walia, the general manager of Fortune Hotel Centre Point, said he had already ordered metal detectors. “We will install detectors both at the front and back gates. This way, employees can also be monitored. We have asked the guards to keep a tab on cars and maintain a logbook with their numbers. No vehicle is being allowed in the no-parking zone,” he said.

The luxury hotel is also planning to install closed-circuit cameras. It has firefighting equipment and water tanks ready to meet emergencies.

Walia said he had formed two special teams.

“I am heading one of them. We will continuously monitor activities in the building. We have restricted the entry of vendors and suppliers at the hotel. Those with proper identity cards will be allowed in. Elevators will be manned by bell boys,” he said.

The Sonnet has sought help from the local police station. “We want them to frequent patrolling in the area. We always had security measures in place. We have CCTV cameras to monitor the lobby and the back gate. But from today, no stranger will be allowed to enter the rooms. If a boarder wants to meet a guest, he or she has to come down to the lobby. Firearms have been banned inside the hotel,” said Swaroop Chakraborty, the vice- president of the hotel.

Meanwhile, a golf tournament organised by Sojitz, a Calcutta-based Japanese firm, that was scheduled in the steel city on November 29 and 30 has been cancelled because some participants are still trapped inside The Oberoi Trident in Mumbai.
