A JMM functionary, running a hotel in a district administration-owned building at Sitaramdera bus stand in Jamshedpur for the last year without renewing his lease, had to vacate the premises on Friday after the local civic body served a notice on him.

According to Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) special officer Dipak Sahay, the owner of the hotel, Upender Singh, left the premises without resistance after the civic body launched an eviction drive from 9am amidst heavy police presence.

Upender has been running Hotel Friendship Inn and Yarana Bar and Restaurant for the last five years. His lease expired on April 2014, but he went on using the premises without renewing it.

"The owner not only failed to renew the lease, but had also constructed permanent structures on his own without informing either the district administration or JNAC in violation of the lease agreement," said Dhalbhum SDO Alok Kumar, who ordered the eviction.

"We had deputed our magistrate... but he (the owner) vacated the premises peacefully. It was to be completed today (Friday), but taking into consideration the huge structure, we gave him time till Saturday," the SDO added.

The building with three storeys is spread over 6,000 sq metre. As per the lease agreement, which expired in April 2014, Upender would have to pay a rent of Rs 1.10 lakh per month to JNAC after renewal.

JNAC officer Sahay alleged Upender had also sub-leased several portions of the building in blatant violation of the lease agreement.

"The hotel owner rented out several parts of the ground floor. This apart, there are several permanent looking structures erected in the building," he said, explaining the nature of the violations.

Upender denied any wrongdoing and threatened to move court.

"I had completed all the lease renewal formalities, but the district administration always procrastinated on lease renewal on some pretext or the other. In fact, I have also deposited Rs 30 lakh as security deposit and completed formalities by buying stamp papers worth Rs 3.5 lakh," Upender, a JMM central committee member, claimed.

He also threatened to move Jharkhand High Court and claimed that his case would soon be heard in a Jamshedpur civil court.
