Jamshedpur: Colleges, both constituent and affiliated to Kolhan University, can start evening classes from the 2018 academic session.
The university's proctor and spokesperson A.K. Jha said the decision was taken to ensure that students do not miss out on higher studies due to employment or shortage of seats.
"We have already asked the colleges that they can go ahead (with the evening classes) if they have more than 150 students in a subject. The varsity wanted to reach out to students who miss higher education due to work or shortage of seats," Jha said.
The university has also suggested that the colleges may either use existing teachers against an extra honourarium or recruit guest teachers for the second session.
The varsity, which currently has 9,000 students enrolled across 45 constituent and affiliated colleges, also aims to reach out to 20 per cent of its student volume through the second shift. Although the move was being planned since 2015, it could not be implemented earlier as most of the colleges had shortage of space and teachers. However most of the colleges now have sufficient space and have recruited guest teachers and can therefore start the programme.
"We always had to turn away students because of the restrictions. Since the university has allowed the same, we will soon start courses in political science and Hindi for the evening batch," an LBSM College teacher said.
Kolhan University is also trying to promote digital classrooms, virtual learning and skill development courses.
"Our aim is that no one should be out of college. If one completes ones intermediate then one must also enrol for graduation. The evening classes are meant for the same," said Jha.
