Students and professors of Kolhan University will now become Digital India ambassadors not just in towns but also on fringes, semi-urban and rural areas.
Kolhan varsity becoming among India's 100 universities to be included in the Digital India training programme, about 270 students and professors of affiliated colleges who are part of the National Service Scheme (NSS), an outfit under the Union ministry of youth affairs and sports engaged in community services, will take part in a workshop on October 20 at varsity headquarters Chaibasa.
At the daylong workshop, 52 Kolhan University professors, who are NSS coordinators, and 218 varsity students who are NSS volunteers, will learn what Digital India is all about. Then, they will spread the word among their peers in the academia, neighbours, city fringes and villages.
National e-Governance Division, an agency of DeitY, in association with NSS, conducts awareness workshops on Digital India across India.
The key feature of these workshops is letting participants know the government's vision behind Digital India and how it helps citizens on a daily basis.
"We are proud to have been included in 100 universities of India and are looking forward to the October 20 workshop. Students and coordinators will gain a lot from the training that shows how India is transforming digitally," said an enthusiastic Arvind Kumar Pandit, co-ordinator of NSS, Kolhan University, and a chemistry professor at Tata College, Chaibasa.
Pandit added a lot of people know the term Digital India but not how it can touch and simplify their lives.
"That's what we will learn at the workshop and also teach others," he said. "The objective of the workshop is to generate and enhance awareness Digital India, which seeks to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge-based economy through information technology. Simply speaking, more and more common people like you and I should know how to get tangible benefits from this initiative."
He stressed everyone, from students and professionals to villagers had to gain from embracing Digital India.
"Things like e-governance services are already available for more transparency in public life. Digital Lockers keep documents safe virtually. These are real changes happening in society, thanks to Digital India," Pandit said.
M. Upasana, a student of Jamshedpur Women's College, also expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming workshop. "We live in a digital world. If I am getting the chance to learn how Digital India can help me and the society I live in, I am all for it," she said.
