
Jamshedpur: Eight outfits, including two from Adityapur in adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan, will vie for top honours during the Jamshedpur Sporting Association (JSA) Open Invitational Hockey Tournament to be held on the Astroturf at Indian Steel & Wire Products Sports Complex near Telco from August 20 to 24.
The five-day event is an initiative by Tata Steel to bring hockey activities on an even keel.
"The open event will have eight teams and matches will be played on knockout basis," said Ritu Raj Sinha, chief, corporate administration, Tata Steel, at a news meet on Friday afternoon.
Sinha, who is also the chairman of the newly formed JSA hockey sub-committee, added they would like to make the open tournament an annual feature. "We are keen on reviving hockey and so hosting tournaments like these are was important. We are also keen to spread awareness about the game among people. There is no dearth of hockey talents in Jharkhand," he said.
The JSA hockey sub-committee also plans to make utmost utilisation of the Astroturf facility by organising more such tournaments, including district and state championships, in future.
The eight participating teams are DBMS English School, Naval Tata Hockey Academy, DBMS High School, Jaipal Singh Munda Club, Bharat Munda Samaj A, Bharat Munda Samaj B (both from Adityapur), Jamshedpur Friend Club A and Jamshedpur Friend Club B.
Matches will be of 25-minute duration with a 10-minute break.
The JSA hockey sub-committee organised a seminar for coaches/managers at JRD Tata Sports Complex on Thursday evening. Participants were updated on several rules and fixtures related to the open tournament.
