Ranchi, Dec. 5: For cops investigating the IDBI robbery, the chickens have come home to roost. A trusted informer of the Patna police, who has helped the Bihar cops in many a breakthrough, is believed to have masterminded the loot of the SIS security van under the Chutia police station area last week.
Sukhu Singh alias Abhishek fled to Patna with the entire amount, which the police now say adds up to Rs 17.50 lakh and not the Rs 30 lakh as claimed by the bank authorities earlier. The SIS security agency was supposed to deposit the money collected from customers when the gang struck.
Senior superintendent of police Anurag Gupta said, ?There was some speculation about the amount looted from the van. But the amount stands at Rs 17.50 lakh. We have made swift progress in the case and are very near solving it. The gang has been identified. Right now, we are trying to arrest the ones who have fled to Patna.?
?The amount is with Singh. A few gang members remain to be arrested. We are sending our teams to Patna and its adjoining areas Once Singh is in the net, the remaining loose ends will be tied up,? added Gupta.
However, nabbing Singh could be a tough task to pull off for as a police official warned, ? he knows how the mind of a policeman works.?
?He is familiar with the way the police work, from the top to the bottom. According to the information we have, he has had a major role to play in many successes of the Patna police. But he has been on the wrong side of the law,? said a senior police official.
Singh?s origins also remain somewhat of a mystery. A section of police sources said he is from Patna. But Gupta said they had leads which suggest that he is from Danapur in Bihar.
Singh and his accomplices came to Ranchi from Daniawa in Bihar on November 23, a day before the attack, said Gupta.
Another official said they put up at a rented house in Chutia under the Chutia police station. The gang members had come to Ranchi many times before and the plan was hatched a month ago.
?Singh has a criminal background. One of his relatives is in the Birsa Munda Jail here. Many policemen of Jharkhand also know him from their stint in Bihar,? added officials.
