Jamshedpur. Aug. 6: With Abhijit Sawant and Debojit redefining the concepts of role models in the 20th century, it was no wonder that kids from all across the state gathered the Chambers Bhavan in Bistupur today to try their luck in Progressive Sa Re Ga Ma — a musical talent hunt show.

Conducted by Progressive Youth Association, a city-based NGO promoting art and culture, the show saw over 200 students queueing up to make the best of their opportunity of making it big.

“We organise this event every year to promote the talent of those who cannot afford to buy their tickets to the popular television shows. So we have students from far-off places like Dhanbad and Patratu,” Mukesh Das, the general secretary of the youth association, said.

Divided into two categories according to their ages, the daylong event witnessed some extremely talented and some rather, well, “noisy” ones.

But unlike a routine local talent hunt, there was more to this that just a jamboree of some wannabe singers.

The organisers have tied up with a renowned television channel and the winners of the contest would get a chance to perform on a television programme.

“Apart from this, we have also tied up with T-series industries to help the best child cut his first album,” added Das.

And if the organisers were all gung-ho about the future, the contestants tried their best to prove themselves.

For Paroma Roy, a student at the city-based Sacred Heart Convent School it was her first chance to make a mark.

“I have prepared a few Asha Bhonsle numbers,” said Paroma, anxiously asking the organisers for her turn.

But amid all these young enthusiasts, it was Ranjit Kumar, a visually-impaired music teacher from Kadma, who hogged the limelight.

“Music has always been my passion and I have performed several times in different shows across the city. But this was a golden opportunity, a one of its kind, to prove myself,” said Ranjit.
