Jamshedpur, Jan. 29: The question and call attention committee of the Assembly today deliberated on charges of irregularities by the drinking water and sanitation department in implementing the Mango water supply project.

The meeting, which took place at Ranchi this morning, was chaired by RJD legislator Annapurna Devi. Though the plethora of charges by BJP legislator from Jamshedpur (West) Sarayu Roy pertaining to the Mango water supply project was raised but senior officials of the drinking water and sanitation department remained tight-lipped.

Sources said that the officials, including the chief engineer, did not make any comment on the alleged irregularities in the tender process of the project.

The chair asked the officials how the tender was processed and necessary yardstick applied to award the contract to agencies or companies.

“The committee referred to the finance commissioner’s notice asking the department officials as to why Jusco was not awarded the contract. The officials only managed to tell that a reply has been made in this regard. But when they were asked about the copy of the reply, officials said it was in the file,” the sources said.

Roy, who was also part of the deliberations, said the committee has summoned the drinking water and sanitation department secretary tomorrow to answer to the queries. “Though some officials of the department attended today’s deliberations, but they apparently did not have any answer to the charges levelled by me,” he added.

The senior BJP leader, who has been spearheading agitation for quick implementation of the Mango water supply project, said that the committee asked the secretary of the department concerned to attend the deliberations with all relevant facts and figures.

Roy added that the officials of drinking water and sanitation department remained mute spectators when they were asked as to why Jusco, which had quoted the lowest rate in the tender, was not awarded the contract.

He added that he was confident of taking the matter to a logical conclusion. “After all, it is a project related to the welfare of the people. But I will fight for the implementation of the project,” Roy said.
