Ranchi: Bhagwan Mahavir Medica Superspecialty Hospital, in association with Tata Teleservices, launched the state's first virtual clinic on its premises on Bariatu Road here on Thursday.
The clinic, equipped with a computer screen and a webcam, allowed 14 patients to consult two specialists - an endocrinologist and a dermatologist - at the hospital's Calcutta wing on Day One. While the consultation was complimentary for the first batch, a nominal fee will be applicable in coming days.
Assistant general manager of Medica (Ranchi) Anil Kumar guaranteed that this was the first-of-its-kind healthcare initiative in the state. "It is an advanced form of telemedicine. Initially, it is a link between our Ranchi and Calcutta hospitals. But gradually, other Medica units will be linked," he said.
To consult an empanelled specialist in Calcutta, a patient can log in using a registered email ID and password. Those who don't have an email can generate one at the hospital. While the patient can interact with the specialist via webcam, medical reports can be scanned and uploaded at the virtual clinic. "A doctor and a technician have been deputed at the e-clinic to help patients," Kumar added.
Anand Srivastava, media adviser of Medica Group of Hospitals, said for starters, diabetics and patients of skin diseases would benefit from the virtual clinic. "Slowly and steadily, other specialist services will be offered."
The virtual clinic will function from 1pm to 2pm on Wednesdays and from 3pm to 5pm on Thursdays.
"Every Wednesday, dermatologist Dr Purwa Ranjeet Mehta will be available for skin patients. Every Thursday, endocrinologist Dr Kaushik Biswas can be consulted by diabetics," Srivastava said.
The media adviser said the system would save people both time and money.
"In a country where the number of good doctors is limited, the e-clinic will be of immense help. We shall soon decide on the consultation fees, which will be affordable," he added.
