Jamshedpur, Dec. 9: Inmates of Sakchi sub-division jail will soon make handloom garments inside the jail premises.
The project, a joint effort of the jail authorities and Bank of India, was in the pipeline for quite some time now but things started moving recently.
Experts from Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) will train the inmates in making handloom garments.
Jail superintendent Deepak Vidyarthi said the project is likely to begin on Republic Day. “Though the logistics of the project is yet to be worked upon, the project is definitely on,” he said.
Apart from the experts from Jan Shikshan Sansthan, some convicts from Ranchi jail, who are adept in making handloom garments, will be transferred to Sakchi, Vidyarthi said.
They will train the inmates in Sakchi, he said. Sources said some of the convicts from Ranchi jail are serving life terms.
The Sakchi jail authorities are in constant contact with their counterparts in Ranchi Central jail to ensure the transfer of these convicts.
“The project will include training-cum-production. The proceeds from the sale of garments will be distributed among the inmates,” Vidyarthi said
He said the jail authorities have asked for quotations for supply of required materials for the project.
Inmates will be taught how to produce handloom garments like kurtas, pyjamas. Other than garments, they will also produce bags, carpets, and various articles of decoration.
“The under trials in Sakchi are already engaged in several activities. We have been thinking of engaging them in a different project. Handloom seemed to be a good option,” Vidyarthi said.
