Jamshedpureans, sing along. It’s Fête de la Musique!

Well, that’s French for World Music Day that will be celebrated across the country on Saturday with your city joining the bandwagon for the first time.

The Society for Health Infrastructure Employment Literacy and Development (SHIELD) has lined up Green Hill Music Festival at Tribal Culture Centre in Sonari to mark the occasion.

Tata Steel, Tata Hitachi and Tata Motors are supporting the daylong event that is being partnered by Off the Wall art gallery.

Music lovers can look forward to a great outing as they will see and hear a tribal musical instrument, Banam, getting reinvented by String Theory, a local band.

“This is the first time that Jamshedpur will be celebrating World Music Day that is observed on June 21 every year. The city takes part in all kinds of festivals, so why not music? We had been trying to do something like this for long and are happy that it got finally materialised,” said Hershwardhan Kumar, organiser of the Green Hill Music Festival.

Kumar, who conceptualised the entire show, said they would be promoting Banam, which has almost become extinct with Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) now trying to revive it. TSRDS imparts music lessons on banam.

“People hardly know about this tribal musical instrument, which is being slowly rediscovered by Tata Steel. We thought it would be interesting to listen to some fusion numbers belted out by String Theory. Banam will be heard with drums and guitar,” Kumar added.
