Jamshedpur, May 11: Traditional Chhau and Odissi are to be blended to create a magical fusion dance form on stage shortly.
Being developed in the form of a fusion ballad, artistes from Seraikela and Orissa would showcase the fusion dance in Switzerland.
Pandit Gopal Dubey, a Chhau expert from Seraikela, who is currently based in Bangalore, is the brain behind four innovative pieces that are being developed on an experimental basis.
“We thought of this as the music in both the dance forms resemble one another,” Dubey told The Telegraph over phone from Bangalore.
At the moment, the master dancer and his 10-member team are busy working on the concept.
Having roped in Chhau dancers from Seraikela, for the Odissi part, Dubey is collaborating with renowned danseuse Vani Jaydev of Orissa.
The dance pieces would retain individualistic flavours of both Odissi and Chhau with special emphasis on the costumes.
“Dancers of both the dance forms would deck themselves in traditional costumes, but the emphasis would be on synchronising the same with the fusion music to be played alongside,” said Dubey.
Scheduled to debut in Bangalore, the theme of first two pieces would revolve around the lives of Radha-Krishna and Devdas. Siddhartha and Ramayan are the probable subjects of the two other shows to be held in Switzerland.
The Swiss government would sponsor the troupe’s entire tour. The musicians would be taken from Mumbai.
A workshop would be held in Seraikela before the team debuts in Bangalore in July. Dubey would reach Seraikela on May 14 to prepare pieces of the fusion show.
