Jamshedpur, Jan. 5: The United Club resembled a Rajasthani fairground today. The occasion was Sharad Mela, an annual event hosted by the Marwari Mahila Manch.

The outfit, comprising members of the Marwari community, organised the fair in an attempt to provide teach the younger generation a little about Marwari culture. In the process, it made for a lot of fun and enjoyment.

“The Sharad Mela is in its 20th year and we take this opportunity to make our younger generation and other communities aware about the richness of Rajasthan. Also, this is an occasion to wish everybody a happy new year,” said Manju Khandelwal, secretary of Marwari Mahila Manch, Jamshedpur.

For the organisation, this was the first event of 2010, and it will be followed by various other social activities in the months to come.

The fair housed about 25 stalls out of which 20 were dedicated to food items from Rajasthan like the traditional dal baati churma, moong dal ka chilla, imarti, kachori with aaloo sabzi etc. However, to meet the demands of the youth, the organisers had also arranged for a South Indian food stall with yummy dosas and idlis. Chinese favourites as well as pizzas and burgers featured too.

There was enough entertainment for children as well with about five games stalls. A fancy dress competition was organised for children aged between six and 10 years. Participants were judged on the basis of their presentation and the character they had chosen. A housie game was also organised for the visitors.
