Ranchi, Nov. 19: Congress MP from Godda Furqan Ansari is again in the midst of a controversy with the police launching an investigation into the funding of his son?s medical education in Russia and how he obtained foreign arms.

Ansari was arrested during the May Lok Sabha election for allegedly transporting arms in his official car.

Inspector-general of police (Santhal Pargana) Kumud Choudhary said: ?Ansari is not only guilty of an offence under the Arms Act, but also of foreign exchange violations. We are investigating how Ansari obtained the foreign arms and how he funded his son?s education in Russia.?

Choudhary refused to elaborate, but sources in the police department said Ansari, while filing his nomination for the Lok Sabha poll from Godda, had submitted an affidavit before the Election Commission in which he declared that he had Rs 11 lakh in bank accounts. ?Ansari has, in his affidavit, mentioned he has Rs 11 lakh in bank accounts, a gold chain, a gold ring and a house on seven decimal of land in Jamtara, worth Rs 4 lakh, which has been let out for a rent of Rs 2,500 per month. Besides he has shown that he has two vehicles ? an Ambassador and a Sumo ? both taken on a Rs 8-lakh loan from the Assembly,? sources said.

The Congress MP has questioned the latest move by the police and said he was being ?victimised? by Choudhary. Ansari claimed that the IG did not have the authority to investigate his property and assets. ?Who is she to look into these issues? Is she an income tax officer? I am a farmer and have been an MLA and have funded my son?s education as all fathers do,? he said.

The MP said he has filed a petition with Jharkhand High Court to quash the cases against him and that was the reason why the police had decided to launch a fresh probe. ?The case was concocted and is a conspiracy hatched to defame me,? Ansari said.
