The incidents of attacks on doctors have increased over the last few years. Do you think doctors no longer enjoy the kind of respect in the society as they used to?

I agree that doctors are less respected nowadays. In fact, why only doctors, but all those who belong to the intellegensia are less respected. Of late, there has been politicisation of the society, as a result of which knowledge and intellect are not given much recognition. In case of doctors, they become the soft targets since they have no power. There is a misconception that a doctor is resourceful and has loads of money. But that is not true.

What you have to say about COPRA (Consumer Protection Act)? Do you think it has become a tool to harass the doctors?

If you set up a nuclear plant, you need to consult a nuclear scientist. Similarly, if you frame an act for improving health care, you need the opinion of the doctors. But sadly, in case of COPRA, doctors' or IMA?s advice was not taken during its formation. Non-medical people framed the act. Thus, people are misusing the act.

There is a hue and cry over the issue of ban on private practice by doctors, especially in RIMS. What is your opinion on the issue?

Private practice in the state or in RIMS should be banned only when the government has provided all the basic health facilities. But in Jharkhand, the government's health care system is in a shambles. In this scenario, if private practise is banned, where will the people go?

How do you plan to associate IMA with the various health programmes launched by the state and central governments?

We have written a letter to the state health department in which we have offered our whole hearted support in implementing national and state level health schemes all over the state.
