Fist of fury hits gold in world boxing ring

Jamshedpur, May 3: Yet another woman of steel has taken on the world. After the Miss India-Universe 2004, Tanushree Dutta, it was the turn of Aruna Mishra who won a gold medal in the Women Boxing World Tournament held in Norway from April 27 to May 1.

Aruna also won a gold medal at Asian Boxing Championship held at Hissar in Haryana in November last year.

The 28-year old Aruna, who recently bagged a contract with Tata Steel for outstanding performance in sports, defeated her opponent from Holland to clinch the title in the 66-kg category at the world meet.

Aruna defeated her opponent from Turkey in the quarterfinals to reach the semi-final where she faced an equally tough competition from Sweden. A trainee of Tata Steel Boxing Training Centre, Aruna had won medals in several national and international-level meets in the past, including the meets held in Turkey and Italy.

Aruna is a final year student of Jamshedpur Women’s College. She received the coveted University Blue award in the year 2003 for her achievements in sports.

Sources in Tata Steel sports department said the young champion and her family members received congratulatory messages from various sports organisations across the country.

“Aruna has done the country proud,” said Gupteshwar Pandey, president of Bihar State Boxing Federation in his congratulatory message.

President of Bihar State Handball Association Vijay Kant Jha also congratulated her family members.

Officials of Tata Steel Sports department said Aruna had to fly to New Delhi today, along with her coach, and would be returning on May 6. She would be given a tumultous welcome during her arrival here, they said.

Celebrations started as Aruna’s family came to know of her singular feat. Her elder brother Nitesh Kumar Mishra told The Telegraph: “It is like a dream come true for us. We knew that her hard work and determination would pay off. This is a matter is a matter of pride, not only for the city and the state, but also for the entire country.”

Principal of Jamshedpur Women’s College, Shukla Mohanty said the college would organise a felicitation after Aruna returns to the city.

“She has made the college and the Ranchi University proud,” she said.
