Creativity was the buzzword on the campus of Ranchi Women's College (RWC) in the capital as its students showed their prowess in fine art competitions as part of the cradle's ongoing youth festival on Thursday.
The four-day festival began on Tuesday at the college's new three-storey building named after former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam with a music competition. A dance contest was held on Wednesday.
On Thursday, students from the college let their imagination run wild in rangoli-making, on-spot painting, cartooning and collage-making competitions. Each of the event had around 10-25 participants.
Pushpa Singh, the head of psychology department, was the coordinator of Thursday's events.
Abhilasha Arya, a second-year English honours student, depicted the beauty of nature through her paintings made with acrylic colours in which a couple could be seen strolling down a park holding hands amid lush green surroundings.
"I do not wish to show any adverse effects of nature caused due to pollution. God has endowed us with rich flora and fauna. So why not celebrate it?" she said.
Third-year chemistry honours student Tanushree Mukherjee and BEd student Sujata Kerketta showed the simplicity of rural life, folks and culture through their paintings.
"We have small huts and fields where farmers are busy ploughing while women folks are helping them. So, I thought of depicting their life through my artwork," said Mukherjee.
The on-spot painting competition had 25 students taking part.
In rangoli-making contest, there were around 15 participants who used coloured sand and earthen diyas to make beautiful rangoli designs.
"We used pink, yellow, green and orange sand to make floral designs and decorated it with diyas," said Kamla Kumari, a second-year philosophy honours student.
Tripti Rani, a second-year English honours student, made a peacock using sand of various colours.
In collage-making competition, 15 students made collages using cut outs of human figures. And, in cartoon-making contest, 10 participants took part and most of them drew cartoons, showing politicians siphoning off public money.
The winners of these events will be announced during a valedictory function on September 24 at the college. Students achieving the first, second and third ranks will participate in the Ranchi University's inter-college youth festival to be held at autonomous St Xavier's College on November 27, 28 and 29.
Ranchi University PRO P.K. Jha said RWC was the first college to hold their youth festival. "Other colleges have not yet decided the dates of their youth fests. They have time till November 15 to organise their fests," he added.
