Ranchi: The body of Myanmar's consul-general in Calcutta, 49-year-old Pyi Soe was handed over to consulate officials on Saturday to be taken to Calcutta via road from Dumri in Giridih, where on Friday morning their SUV, in trying to avoid a bike, was rammed by a truck on GT Road.
Soe's widow Nyo Aou, 38, personal assistant Tintuang, 40, and driver Bipin Singh, 51, who were in the ill-fated SUV, are stable at Ranchi's Bhagwan Mahavir Medica Superspecialty Hospital.
Chief secretary Rajbala Verma, who visited the hospital around 1pm, was satisfied with the line of treatment given to them, a media release from information and public relations department said.
A reliable Medica source told this paper that all three were stable but their release would depend on their condition and state government's directives.
"According to unconfirmed information, Soe's cremation is likely to be held on Monday in Calcutta. So, we are working out arrangements for his widow to reach Calcutta tomorrow (Sunday). We will give medical backup while escorting the bereaved lady," said the source.
Giridih civil surgeon Dr Kamlesh Prasad said Soe's body was sent in an air-conditioned ambulance along with a special police escort given by the administration.
Dumri SDO Gyan Prakash Minz said two senior officials from Myanmar consulate came in the morning to complete formalities and take the envoy's body.
"They left (with the body) at 10am via road. All senior officials of Giridih district were present," Minz said.
On Friday, the envoy and his wife were returning to Calcutta from Bodh Gaya in Bihar when the mishap occurred on GT Road at Nimiyaghat in Giridih, 150km from Ranchi.
The envoy's SUV was following a speeding biker when suddenly, the two-wheeler took a turn to the right, forcing the SUV driver to brake. The SUV then skidded and a truck coming from the opposite direction hit it. The consul-general was seated on the left on the back seat while his wife was beside him.
Soe was declared dead after being rushed to hospital in Dumri while the three others were rushed to Ranchi for better treatment.
