lI do not think that dress codes are necessary for schoolteachers. What purpose will it serve anyway? Dress codes are meant to ensure decency and discipline and most teachers come in sober attire. Sarees and salwars are considered to be decent and if the school management thinks that it may lead to any negative perceptions among the students or male teachers, it is an incorrect notion.

lAt a time, when academic pressure is so intense, students do not have time to think about their teachers? dress codes. In fact, I think that dress codes are more necessary for college students than for schoolteachers. College students sometimes wear provocative clothes. Several colleges have reacted to this and have banned wearing short skirts and jeans on their campuses. But this is not required for schoolteachers. There are more serious problems that require immediate attention such as academic pressure, suicide cases and punishment by teachers.

lDress codes are necessary because they affect the way the students? perceive teachers and may hamper their education. There are some teachers who spend a huge amount on their dress, while others come in ordinary clothes. Teachers should remember their role and keep in mind that they are not there to make a fashion statement, rather their role is to concentrate on education.

lIn our times, there was no dress code as it was not necessary. Most of the teachers were from poor or middle class families. But now the situation is different. Most of the teachers come from affluent families and teaching has become a pastime for them. I do not doubt the sincerity of the teachers, but this definitely hampers the education system. Therefore, in my opinion, a dress code is a must and is for the benefit for all.

lIf it?s an all girls? school, there is no need for a dress code, but it is necessary in case of co-educational institutions. Teachers should remember that provocative clothes divert the attention of students. Therefore, they need to be dressed properly. But once again, one aspect should be kept in mind, that as long as teachers do their jobs well and students are interested in studies, the dress codes debate should not be made into a big issue.

lI feel there should be no dress code for teachers. The whole idea seems pointless. Teachers are adults and after wearing uniforms all their lives in schools, they certainly have a right to dress the way they want to. Needless to say, teachers can look equally provocative in sarees as well, should they decide to do so. The whole point is dressing up modestly.

lThe decision to implement dress code for teacher is a welcome step because it will help in inculcating a sense of discipline among students. I personally feel that the decision should be extended to colleges as well. At present, teachers wear whatever they want to and sometimes the way they dress can be provocative. I feel that if the teachers come to schools and colleges properly attired, it will send the right message to youngsters.

Area education officer, Jamshedpur
lThis is ridiculous. The government norms do not specify any dress norms for teachers, either male or female. Private schools should focus more on providing quality education to their students rather then formulating such norms.
Moreover, if the school authorities fix any dress code for the teachers, the management should bear the expenses. And in such a situation, it is more than likely that the students would be asked to bear the additional costs for implementing the latest whim of the school authorities.

lI strongly vouch for dress codes for teachers. Like students, even teachers should abide by certain rules and should not be given a free hand in deciding their choice of attire in schools. Teachers have always been looked up to in society and they should abide by certain rules. The problem is all the more acute in all boys? school and the bottom line should always be on non-revealing outfits, be it formal western wear or the traditional Indian saree.

lI certainly feel that there should be a dress code for teachers, be it in school or at college. Teachers are role models for so many students. How they present themselves is something that should go down well with the students.

lThough it is not necessary to have a dress code for teachers in schools, but there is no harm if one is introduced. Students look up to teachers and spend most part of their day interacting them, sometimes even more than the their parents. So if the teachers abide by a dress code, it gives a good impression to their students. There are many students who want their teachers to like them because they look up to their teachers. In that case, it is better if teachers maintain a dress code. In some schools like DPS, there are dress codes in winter in the form of a blazer that the teachers wear. It looks professional and improves the image of the individual. I think that should be continued and practised in other schools as well.

lI think, teachers should have a dress code like the students. But it should be subject wise. For example, a teacher teaching maths should have a different colour of dress than that teaching Hindi or physics. This will let the students know who teaches what and also create a uniform discipline among them. Dress code is important as it creates a discipline in the school. The dress code should also include rules such as teachers are not supposed to use too much make-up or wear high heels.
