Ranchi, Dec. 4: Following the recent sodomy allegations, DAV Nandraj Public School has decided to conduct a seminar on adolescence and sex education for the students, apart from implementing rules to safeguard them from such incidents.

These steps are being taken after a complaint was registered against the school?s administrator P.K. Sinha, who heads the junior sections (Nursery to Class V). According to the FIR, registered by the alleged victim?s parents, the school official has been giving gifts to the nine-year-old student without any particular reason for the past two months. Further, the boy had said, Sinha had been calling him to the roof of the school and assaulting him for a week.

The school has now decided to show a pro-student face with the news rules and the proposed seminar. According to the school management, experts will talk to the students about adolescence, its problems and solutions.

Principal of the school A.K. Karn said: ?We are going to hold a seminar and interactive session on adolescence and sex education for the students on Monday. Two of our teachers, Sharmishta Choudhery and Sushmita Bose, had attended a seminar organised by the Lions Club and have gathered some very useful information. The duo will talk to the students about the various aspects related to sex education. We hope that this move will make the students aware of some important things that they need to understand.?

The school officials stated that students from Class VII onwards would be attending the session.

Apart from the seminar, the authorities have also decided to revamp certain practices that were being followed until now. The school has put a stop to the recesses. Now the students have to sit in their respective classes during the various breaks and teachers have been asked to be present in the class with them. ?At present, we are not allowing the students to go out of the building during the recess times. But then, this is just temporary,? said Karn.

?We are now trying to be cautious so that the school does not hit a roadblock yet again. We had introduced a complaints box system, in which any complaints or suggestions could be dropped. But no one was using it properly. Now we plan to make the whole process even more efficient,? added Karn.

Moreover, all the students have been directed not to go to any secluded place within the campus by themselves. Teachers have been asked to be extra vigilant and accompany junior students, even to the bathrooms.

?We have asked teachers and other officials to keep the classrooms locked whenever the students leave. Teachers have also been specifically directed to always be with the students in the junior classes. They should not be left alone under any circumstances,? added the principal.

But these directives have not gone down well with the teachers and students, if sources are to be believed.

?They are just not happy about it. Teachers have got a lot of extra work to do and these (rules) could be a hindrance. The same can be said for the students too, as they are not allowed to leave the building for hours at a stretch,? pointed out an official.

Meanwhile, sources said a member of the committee formed by the district administration visited the school today and talked to the senior officials at length. ?It was a closed-door meeting inside the principal?s office. The principal was showing some letters and other papers to the member,? sources added.

Commenting on the controversy surrounding the payment to teachers, Karn said: ?I joined (only) this year and have no idea about it. (former principal Sharbani) Biswas should know better. She was the principal for a long time. And it was during her time that these anomalies took place.?
