Tata Sons chairman Cyrus P. Mistry sportingly tried his hand at tug-of-war, archery and golf at the Gopal Maidan greens on Thursday afternoon, soaking in the jubilation of Founder's Day Sports held in remembrance of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata's birth anniversary.
The corporate honcho, sporting his trademark blue shirt and black trousers put his strength behind the Works team against rivals non-Works led by Tata Steel managing director T.V. Narendran in the tug-of-war.
After a mighty show of strength, Mistry had the last laugh.
The Tata Sons boss then picked up a recurve bow and aimed for the bullseye. The arrow slipped from the bow's rest a couple of times before Dronacharya Purnima Mahto put it in place. Mistry also couldn't position his bow properly. Ace archer Deepika Kumari chipped in to correct the flaw.
The first shot was not impressive, but the bespectacled Mistry improved upon it by notches in the subsequent attempts, drawing huge applause from Narendran, vice-president (corporate services) Sunil Bhaskaran, president (total quality management and steel business) Anand Sen, Tata Workers' Union chief R. Ravi Prasad, senior functionaries of the company's sports wing and other onlookers.
He was also introduced to men and women archers, busy honing their skills at the ongoing training camp for the forthcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Mistry signed quite a few autographs.
Archery over, Mistry took to golf, putting over three holes on the wonderfully trimmed greens. Despite missing the holes, Mistry, who teamed up with Sen, seemed happy to go putting. Narendran also teamed up with Bhaskaran to tee off with flair.
Mistry also handed over a trophy and Rs 5,000 to Tata Archery Academy cadet Prachi Singh, who was adjudged the best sportsperson of the year.
He also handed over trophies to various winning teams of the sports day.
West Bokaro emerged all-over champions in the men's category of the Founders' Day Sports, comprising mainly athletics, with 152 points while Coke and Sinter Plant walked home with the honours in the women's category.
Besides regular track events, fun games like sack race, standing volleyball throw for executives, cycle race with pot balance were also held.
In a heart-warming event, special athletes displayed their abilities in games like passing-the-ball and feed-the-tiger.
Mistry also met the Everest ladies of Jamshedpur, pioneer Bachendri Pal and mom-mountaineer Premlata Agarwal, on the occasion.
