Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC), which earns crores by way of fees collected from its bus and auto stands, is, however, unable to provide basic amenities for the large number of people who use these facilities.

A survey of 18 bus stands and auto parking spaces across the city, contracts for which are to be auctioned on Saturday, revealed that a majority of the parking spaces and bus stands did not have proper toilet or drinking water facilities.

Birsa Bus Stand a Khadgarha, which contributed Rs 1.08 crore of the Rs 2.38 crore RMC earned in fees from bus stands and parking spaces in 2014-15, has been under renovated for more than a year now.

"Bus drivers, conductors and passengers have to use toilets of Sulabh International by paying extra charges as there is no toilet facility at the Birsa Bus Stand," said Krishna Mohan Singh, president of Jharkhand Bus Owners' Association.

He said corporation officials always ended up making hollow promises, saying that since Governor Syed Ahmed had laid the foundation stone of the bus stand's development project on May 29, 2013 facilities would be installed soon.

Similar is the situation at auto stands on Argora Chowk, in front of Reliance Mega Mart (Kanke Road); on Purulia Road, in front of St Xavier's College; and on Ratu Road at New Market, besides the ones at Ramgarh Trekker Stand, on Itki Road, at Ranchi Hill, Ranchi University Gate and on Main Road in front of Big Bazar.

Founder president of Jharkhand Pradesh Diesel Autochalak Mahasangh Dinesh Soni said, "There is no space at auto stands to park our three-wheelers properly. There is no light, no drinking water and no toilets. RMC officials only want to earn money by designating an area as a parking zone, but don't bother about creating basic facilities."

CEO of RMC Prashant Kumar said the civic body did not have any plans to upgrade facilities at bus stands and auto stands. "RMC has already provided washrooms and toilets at 65 places across the city," he said.
