Jamshedpur: Over 150 residents of Ram Krishna Colony locked up Payal Cinema in Mango on Sunday to protest against the prevailing unhygienic condition of the locality caused by a damaged drainage line connected to the theatre.
The agitated residents, led by local BJP leader Vikas Singh, stormed into the theatre, located near the colony, at around 10.30am and locked its gates.
"The drainage pipeline is lying damaged for several months. In spite of repeated assurances, the management of the theatre has failed to repair it. So the residents have decided to lock up the theatre seeking an immediate solution," said the BJP leader, who is also a resident of Mango.
Both the owners of Payal Cinema - Rahul Sawa and Vishal Sawa - reached the spot when they learnt about the protest. The angry residents refused to withdraw the agitation till the hall owners called in workers to mend the pipeline.
"We have decided to completely replace the damaged pipeline, which I guess will solve the problem. In fact we did repair the pipeline on several occasions in the past, but recently it was hit by a truck," said Vishal Sawa.
Dinesh Kumar, a local resident, said, "The dirt and filth of the drainage line has entered our colony. The road that leads to the colony is now unfit to walk. The management of Payal Cinema should take immediate measures to stop the dirty water from flowing into our colony."
Payal Cinema falls under Olidih thana. Sources said police was not intimated about the agitation that lasted for about an hour. The movie shows were also not affected as the first morning show starts from 11.30am. The theatre is currently screening Firangi, starring comedian Kapil Sharma.
