Jamshedpur, July 18: The “fake” experience certificates, which were confiscated during a job interview at a city hotel yesterday, have been sent to the Tata Steel Vigilance department for scrutiny.

The certificates bore the signature of Tata Steel managing director B. Muthuraman and other top officials of the company.

The city police busted the racket after receiving a tip-off about Shams Tabrez, wanted in the Ghatkopar bomb blast in Mumbai. Tabrez was appearing for an interview, being conducted by International Overseas Services, for the post of mechanical maintenance personnel in Kuwait. The police recovered an experience certificate issued by Tata Steel from him. Picking up the cue, they investigated for more such “experience certificates”.

A raid was conducted in the hotel and the police collected all the application forms that had come to the firm. “We collected nearly 80 such certificates from the agent Vipul Bhatia’s room. One of the certificates bore the signature of the Tata Steel managing director B. Muthuraman. But his designation was that of a divisional manager,” additional superintendent of police (ASP) Saket Kumar Singh said. Officials of Tata Vigilance department were summoned immediately.

“We have forwarded almost 35 such certificates out of the 80 seized yesterday. If any one of these is found to be fake, they will be arrested and we might be able to nab an ongoing fake certificate racket,” Singh said.

Sources said some of the certificates appeared to be fake due to mismatch of signatures and discrepancies in the designations of the officials mentioned. Besides, the letter pads used were obsolete, they added.

Tata Steel vigilance and security departments are scrutinising the certificates now. “We expect results within a couple of days,” said Singh.
