Ranchi: A city, comprising roads, buildings and parks, is made of various shapes and sizes and 'mathematicity' is a perfect term to define the concept.

Such unique ideas and projects on mathematics came to the fore during a two-day exhibition that kicked off at Guru Nanak Higher Secondary School in Ranchi on Thursday.

Over 100 students from Classes VII to X took part in the exhibition on the occasion of National Mathematics Day that falls on December 22 to mark the birth anniversary of mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

"Such exhibitions help to ward off the fear of maths from the minds of students. Maths is no longer scary when you understand its basics in a playful way," said school principal Manohar Lal, who was conferred the President Award last year.

Students displayed over 30 models based on various two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, bar graphs and pie chart. They also put up charts and diagrams to explain mathematical concepts and formulae like Pythagoras theorem.

A group of students won applause for showcasing a model on Harappan era when buildings and monuments were mostly conical or cylindrical in shape.

"We have been celebrating National Mathematics Day on December 22 every year. The exhibition will help students develop a love for mathematics," said Lal, adding a maths quiz was also held on Wednesday.

Students were equally excited to develop unique models that helped them learn the subject better. "These models and diagrams are surely useful to understand all complex mathematical formulae and theories," said Yash Raj, a Class VII student.
