'Cold' death

Giridih: A 47-year-old railway employee died at Gopaldih in Bagodar, around 55km from Giridih town, on Thursday reportedly due to cold.

Police said there was no injury mark on Mahendra Yadav's body.

Coal cuffs

Giridih: Five persons were arrested and 17 bikes seized for transporting illegal coal in Mufassil area here on Thursday.

Health leaves

Ranchi: Health minister Ramchandra Chandravanshi has promised paid leaves to the contractual workers of National Health Mission.

Ex-Speaker ill

Bokaro: Former Speaker Inder Singh Namdhari fell sick during his visit to Bokaro on Thursday. He has been admitted to Bokaro General Hospital with complaint of chest pain. His condition is stated to be stable.

Net banking

Ranchi: Volunteers of National Service Scheme (NSS) at BIT-Mesra visited three nearby villages - Rudia, Nawatoli and Pancholi - to create awareness on promoting cashless economy.

Volunteers and students held nukkad nataks and went door-to-door to educate people on e-banking, money transfer apps and swipe machines, among others.

Olympiad trio

Ranchi: Three Class XI students of JVM-Shyamali have qualified in Regional Mathematical Olympiad, exam for which was held in November. The students, Joshika, Javed Hussain and Tanmay Mandal, will now appear in the national-level Indian National Mathematics Olympiad in January next year.

Inauguration

Ranchi: Cardinal Telesphore P. Toppo inaugurated a church (minor basilica) at Ulhatu village in Namkum block, some 20km from here, on Thursday. Thousands of faithful attended a mass led by the Cardinal on the occasion.

Axe on cowsheds

Dhanbad: Twenty-five unauthorised cowsheds were removed during an anti-encroachment drive conducted by RPF and police here on Thursday. The seven-hour drive, which began around 9am, was led by OC of RPF outpost B.M. Mishra.

RU poll meet

Ranchi: SSP Kuldeep Dwivedi held a meeting with the OCs of different police station to review the security arrangements ahead of Ranchi University students' union elections on Friday. He directed the OCs to depute teams at strategic places in and around various colleges.

Grilled for murder

Two persons have been detained for their suspected involvement in connection with the murder of Amit Rai (35), trusted lieutenant of businessman Upendra Singh (56), who was shot dead on the premises of Jamshedpur civil court on November 30.

While Sunny Singh (30) was nabbed from Gamharia on Wednesday night, Vishal Singh (28) was picked up from his Sakchi home on Thursday. Both are being interrogated. Police sources said that Vishal was a close acquaintance of Rai, but the duo parted ways after a recent brawl. Rai was gunned down on Tuesday at a time when the police were frantically searching for gangster Akhilesh Singh, the key accused in both the murder cases who is currently out on bail.

Assault FIR

A 30-year-old man was assaulted by two youths at Bhuiyandih Chowk in Jamshedpur on Thursday. Ashok Sharma, a resident of Bhuiyandih, was on his way to Sakchi market on his bike when Golu Prasad and Rakesh Kumar intercepted him and assaulted him. Police said Sharma had some old enmity with the duo, who are on the run. An FIR has been lodged.

Bikes stolen

The bike of one Rupesh Gupta was stolen from near his house at Bhatia Bustee in Jamshedpur on Thursday. In another incident, one Mohan Mukhi's bike was stolen from Bhatia Park in the evening.

Bank meeting

East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Amit Kumar chaired a meeting with the district-level bankers' committee at the district collectorate in Sakchi, Jamshedpur, on Thursday and asked all the bankers' representatives to work towards making Ghatshila cashless by December 25.
