Bokaro lifts itself to record books

Jamshedpur, Dec. 29: Sanjay Kumar and Babu Krishna from Bokaro created two new meet records in the men?s category on the concluding day of the third Jharkhand State (Men?s and Women?s) Weightlifting Championships at JRD Tata Sports Complex today.

While the former set a new mark in the 105 kg weight category, the latter shared honours in the 105-plus weight category.

Kumar shattered the previous record of Tata Steel?s Rakesh Kumar Pandey by coming out with a total lift of 257 kg (115 in snatch and 142.5 kg in clean and jerk). Pandey had managed 237 (107 and 130) in the state meet held here last year.

The strongly-built Krishna broke his own clean and jerk record of 120 kg which was set in the last state championships. The Bokaro lifter set the new mark by lifting 130 kg in clean and jerk, totalling 230 kg, including 100 kg in snatch.

Both Kumar and Babu received huge applause from the crowd that had assembled to watch the proceedings this evening.

Rajesh Kumar Pathak, also from Bokaro, claimed the silver with a total lift of 200 kgs (90 and 110 kgs) in the 105 kg weight category while Jagraj Singh of Community Development and Social Welfare, Tata Steel managed bronze with a total lift of 145 kg (65 and 80 kg).

Sushil Mahato of Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company (Jusco) won the silver with a total lift of 70 kg (30 and 40 kg) in the 105-plus weight cate-gory.

Sujit Mukherjee of Bokaro won the gold in the 85-kg weight category by having a total lift of 237.5 kg (112.5 and 125 kg) while SK Moinuddin of Jusco grabbed the silver with a lift of 210 kg (90 and 120 kg). Arindam Bhattacharya of CD&SW took the bronze at 195 kg (90 and 105 kg).

The men?s category events, held in the morning session, saw Gani Ansari of Tata Steel of Tata Steel bagging gold in the 69-kg weight category while CD&SW?s Sandeep Chandra Singh winning the silver.

The bronze medal went to Babu Narayan Singh of Bokaro Sports Association.

Ansari topped the event by lifting a total of 200 kg (90 kg in snatch and 110 in jerk) while Singh managed 180 kg (82.5 and 97.5 kg). Babu had 162.5 (70 and 92.5 kg) to boast of.

Md Farhan of CD&SW claimed gold in the 77-kg weight category while Ranjit Mishra of BSA grabbed the silver. Mukesh Kumar, also of CD&SW, managed bronze.

While Farhan lifted a total of 202.5 kg (87.5 and 110 kg), Mishra sweated out to lift 195 kg (80 and 115 kg). Kumar managed 190 kg (90 and 100 kg).

Tata Steel corporate communications head Sanjay Choudhury, who was the chief guest on the concluding day, handed over the prizes. The meet was organised by Jharkhand Weightlifting Association (JWA).
