Bokaro, Aug. 9: The next two years will see the 44-year-old Bokaro Club functioning under a new board after the election results were declared late last night.

Harsh Nigam, who works at the steel melting shop department of Bokaro Steel, has been elected new general secretary of the club. Nigam beat a senior official from the sinter plant department, Jitendra Jaiswal, by 354 votes.

Speaking to the media after his win, Nigam said he would work hard so that the members remembered him for his constructive activities and not false promises. “I will do my best to solve the problems of the club,” he added.

Of the 1,070 club members, only 801 turned up for the election on Sunday and elected a new treasurer and seven directors. In a keenly contested election for the post of treasurer, R.N. Biswas won with 436 votes while his opponent Vinay Anand of the public department managed 352 votes.

For the post of treasurer and secretary there was a direct contest, whereas nine officials competed for the post of directors. Of them, only seven were elected. The new directors of the board are Ajay Sharma (466) Jitendra Kumar (456), Kamlesh Kumar (449), Pankajlata (432), Ashok Kumar (395), T. Prasad (367) and Vishal Kumar Bansal, who polled 358 votes.

Bokaro Club was established on April 6, 1967, with managing director of Bokaro steel plant taking over the honorary post of the president. Till 1991, elections were held annually. However, the tenure of office-bearers was extended to two years from 1992.
