Jamshedpur, Oct. 24: Continuing their attack on petrol pumps in and around the city, a gang of five motorcycle- borne assailants looted Rs 20,000 after gunning down a fuel station manager in Ulidih on Dimna road under Mango police station area yesterday.

The victim, identified as Bijon Mandal, was rushed to the MGM Medical College Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. He had been shot at the chest from close range.

Just 10 minutes before the pump raid, five assailants had opened fire at a Durga Puja pandal in Rajendra Nagar in Ulidih injuring four persons. One of them, Babua Singh, was seriously injured.

All the victims have been admitted to the Tata Main Hospital, where the condition of the group, barring Babua Singh, is stated to be out of danger. Those admitted to the Tata Main Hospital, includes Babua Singh, Sittal Pal, Sanjay Sharma and Bijay Yadav, all residents of Mango.

Babua Singh had sustained bullet injuries in his neck and hand, but has been successfully operated upon. Sources said the gang, which opened fire at the pandal, was the same as the one that had raided the petrol pump.

Eyewitnesses said the criminals, in their twenties, had fired indiscriminately trying to kill Babua Singh and had looted the sale proceeds of the pump.

Separate cases have been lodged at the Ulidih police stations on the basis of FIRs lodged by Makhesh Kumar, a worker in the petrol pump and Babua Singh respectively.

According to the FIR, at about 1.30 pm, assailants led by Lalit Sharma came to the Rajendra Nagar Puja pandal in a drunken state and wanted to dance. But the organisers objected to it and the goon went back. However, they returned after an hour and started firing at the organisers indiscriminately.

The criminals wanted to target Babua Singh, but as they were all drunk they missed the target and injured three. When contacted, Ulidih officer-in-charge B.K. Singh said the police have got some leads into the murder and investigation was on.

Sources said Singh was threatened by the goons a couple of days ago over a feud. The attack has sent shockwaves through the petrol-pump owners, many of whom have decided to hire private security agencies.
