Stories by cub reporters of East Singhbhum schools will soon find place on the Net, courtesy a city-based NGO.

Adarsh Seva Sansthan, an NGO that works with Unicef to monitor the Bal Patrakar or Child Reporters programme in Ghatshila, Musabani, Jamshedpur and Dalbhumgarh, has come up with a blog that will help these future scribes post their thoughts online.

Community stories, pictures and video clips on issues like child marriage, dowry, child labour, school development and immunisation are uploaded on http://childreportersjamshedpur.blogspot.in. The homepage of the blog is titled Baal Patrakaro ki Chaupal.

“We have already uploaded seven stories and hope to do more as there is already a database of 8,000 reports. Some stories are inspiring tales of changes that Bal Patrakar has brought in villages. Thus, we intend to upload and make them more popular,” said Tarun Kumar, district co-ordinator of the programme.

Unicef had launched the initiative in November 2009 in government schools. Students from Classes VI to VII in 173 schools have been covered under the programme.

Apart from using the tech tool, Unicef had tied up with a Ranchi-based vernacular daily to print such stories. The agreement ended in December and a fresh one has been made with two Hindi dailies.

“It has been successful in both Ranchi and East Singhbhum,” said Moira Dawa, communication officer of Unicef, Jharkhand.
