A group of around 150 BJP workers demonstrated in front of East Singhbhum deputy commissioner’s office on Monday to demand action against those involved in the destruction of the foundation stone plaque of a community centre at Kanchan Nagar in Burmamines in the wee hours of Sunday.

Later, a delegation, led by BJP district committee president Dinesh Sahu, met deputy commissioner (DC) Ravi Shankar Shukla and handed him a memorandum.

The plaque had the names of former chief minister Raghubar Das and Jamshedpur MP Bidyut Baran Mahto engraved on it. Das and Mahto had inauguarated the building in February this year.

Funtionaries of the BJP’s Burmamines unit had visited the community centre on Sunday after getting information about the vandalism.

Mahto, who also visited the spot, later decided to register a formal complaint with the district administration.

Speaking to the reporters on Monday, Sahu said the vandals had not only damaged the plaque but also destroyed party flags at various places in the Jamshedpur East constituency from where Saryu Roy fought and won as an Independent in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

“We strongly believe that the supporters of Saryu Roy are behind all this. If one more party flag or plaque is destroyed, we will be compelled to hit the streets and agitate,” the BJP district president said.

Roy could not be contacted for his comment.

DC Shukla confirmed that a delegation of BJP workers had handed him a memorandum on the issue.“I will get the matter probed and initiate necessary action,” he said.
