Jamshedpur, Jan. 23: A senior state BJP leader was killed in a freak accident on Dimna Road in Mango late last night, prompting minister Saryu Roy to demand immediate steps to jam the brakes on reckless driving on the busy stretch that saw at least two more fatal mishaps earlier this week.
State Scheduled Caste cell's spokesperson Narayan Rajak (65) was returning home to Teachers' Colony in Mango from a party meeting near the local market around 10.45pm when a car rammed into the bike he was riding from behind.
Rajak, who was flung in the air under the impact, landed on the road and suffered grievous injuries in the head. He was not wearing a helmet. The car sped away from the scene, leaving the BJP leader in a pool of blood.
Local residents rushed him to Tata Main Hospital emergency, where he was declared brought dead.
Rajak is survived by wife Shakuntala Devi, a son and a daughter.
As the news of the mishap spread, several party leaders, including food and civil supplies minister Roy and, BJP's district committee president Nandji Prasad, rushed to Tata Main Hospital.
Olidih OC Kamleshwar Paswan said that police had traced the whereabouts of the car owner. "Some eyewitnesses managed to note down the registration number of the killer car (JH05-BG-6993). Police have already identified the owner - one Vinit Kumar, a resident of Repeat Colony in MGM police station area of Mango. Search is on," he said.
Today, speaking to The Telegraph, minister Roy said: "The party has lost an active and sincere leader."
Roy said Dimna Road had become a mishap-prone stretch and that he would talk to the district police to take necessary steps to prevent mishaps and reckless driving on this busy artery.
Sources said this was the third mishap on the stretch in the past four days. On Tuesday, a 38-year-old man, Kamaldeep Singh of Anand Behar Colony in Mango, was knocked down by an unknown vehicle. Again, on Wednesday, 50-year-old Dinesh Laha, a resident of Chandinagar, was crushed under the wheels of a truck.
